Art Therapy

According to Psychology Today, Art Therapy utilizes paintings, drawing, coloring, sculpting or any other form of artistic expression to help people express inward emotions freely without having to verbalize their issues as much. It can be helpful to conduct Art Therapy with children, adolescents and adults who may be confused about their emotions. These emotions can be a result of everyday life occurrences, or specific to a traumatic event or loss. Art therapy can aid in the exploration of emotions, improving self esteem, stress relief, or to cope with anxiety or depression. I am not a certified art therapist, but as a former art teacher and an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist I can borrow therapeutic art techniques to utilize in session when exploring emotions that may be hard for a client to verbalize. Instilling creativity into sessions with clients who are interested in artistic means of expression can help bring awareness to emotions that even the client may not be fully conscious of.
