Grief and Loss

Every human being will experience some type of loss at various points in their lives, whether it be in the form of death or something different. Feelings of grief and loss can commonly surface after the loss of a:

  • Loved one

  • Friendship

  • Pregnancy

  • Pet

  • Job

  • Nostalgic item

  • House

According to Mental Health America, grief can leave a person feeling:

  • Sad

  • Hopeless

  • Denial

  • Disbelief

  • Confusion

  • Shock

  • Sadness

  • Yearning

  • Anger

  • Humiliation

  • Despair

  • Guilt

  • Isolated

  • Irritable

  • Numb

Everybody copes differently, and the feelings associated with loss are completely normal. Talk therapy can help improve one’s individual coping skills that are affecting them mentally, emotionally, and physically. Reduction of blame and guilt can occur after the exploration and process of emotions. It will take time to fully process the loss. In the case of losing a loved one, it is important to keep in mind that while you will never stop missing that person, the pain will ease with time and further allow you to go on with your life.
