Identity

According to an article written on Psychology Today by Shahram Heshmat, Ph.D., identity  is formed by a human’s basic value system.  These values, in turn, help steer the choices we make in many areas of our life such as our relationships, career choice, and day to day interactions with the world.

According to Dr. Heshmat’s article, “Knowing one’s identity accurately increases self-esteem and reduces depression and anxiety. When people are doing what they think they should be doing, they are happy.”  You can read the article, in its entirety, by clicking on this link:

The question of identity and its importance in therapy is further explored by Good Therapy.  Their website suggests that a lack of identity can lead to codependency, which is displayed when a person bases their sense of self on the opinions of others.  It is also suggested that someone with a lack of identity may also have depression, which can lead to a feeling of “worthlessness” and an ability to be unlovable. To me, as a therapist, identity is a crucial element in helping an individual find what they truly need in life and a way for a person to truly connect to themself.
